Katja’s artistic journey began in 2004 when she gained City & Guilds and BTEC certificates in Photography at Richmond and Lambeth College in London. She later re-trained in illustration and was awarded a Master of Arts in Sequential Design/Illustration from the University of Brighton in 2011.

Her passion for boisterous lacy fashion, fancy hats, burlesque theatre, antique dolls, tattoo art, haunted mansions, vampires and cupcakes has always provided an abundance of inspiration for her work.

She is fascinated by Pop Surrealism, the Steam Punk revival and anything remotely Victorian.

Over the years her artwork has been highly influenced by the dark humour of Tim Burton, Edward Gorey, David Roberts and the visually stunning world of Mark Ryden, Nicoletta Ceccoli and Benjamin Lacombe.

Katja is a part-time freelance illustrator and has exhibited at the highly acclaimed Egg House, nominated for the Best Open House Award in 2009. Other venues include the Cactus Gallery, Starbucks and the UB Visual Arts Graduate Show 2011.

She loves to scour vintage markets and rescue second-hand books and treasures that can be given a new breath of life, and has a soft spot for decadent patisseries and rose Saint-Honore’s.

Katja is one of the resident artists at the Naughty Pirates Gallery on Brighton seafront, and a regular at Waterstones, where she spends most of her weekends sipping tea with a Baron and creating unique and quirky characters that are becoming increasingly popular.
