From the moment Monika Jakimauskaite arrived in Brighton she fell in love with the city because it reminded her of her hometown in Lithuania, which is also by the sea. Now, having been selected from thousands of artists based in the UK and internationally, Monika shows her work in the West London based gallery, Debut Contemporary, as well as exhibiting at other spaces and fairs across the capital, bringing the vibrant Brighton scene and energy to London through her work.
Monika started taking pictures of the city and hoped to show them somewhere one day. After gaining a BA degree in Textile Design & Technology back home at the Lithuania Academy of Arts, she completed a Black & White photography course at Brighton University and a Printed Textiles course in Brighton and Hove City College. Combining these two techniques, created Monika’s unexpected and unique mixed media of photography and textile.
Photography is Monika’s passion and textile is her craft. The resulting artworks are photographic prints on fabrics, using embroidery and appliqué to extend details. This enables her to capture special sights and moments from every day in a beautiful, totally original combination of mixed media. With landscapes and architecture as her main subjects, Monika uses mostly bright, vibrant colours and intricate details, such as ornaments, to bring her artworks alive. The result is unusual and very intriguing.
With a fashion designer mother, and her father an actor and semi-professional photographer, Monika grew up surrounded and influenced by textiles, photography and culture.
Monika shows her work regularly at exhibitions and art fairs in the UK and back home in Lithuania. She recently had her first solo exhibition in Lithuania, called ‘Moments’. Monika has appeared on National TV in Lithuania and has been published in Aesthetica, Brighton`s Arty Magazine, Laima Magazine, West Express, Literature & Art and Klaipeda Newspapers in Lithuania.
